A Jolly Affair: Whitevale's Lunch with Santa

Last Saturday, Whitevale came alive with festive cheer as families gathered for a delightful event - Lunch with Santa.

The event included a festive feast, cookie decorating, Christmas crafts and, of course, Santa! Families and friends sat together, savoring the delectable dishes while sharing laughter and stories.

The highlight of the day, of course, was the much-anticipated visit from Santa Claus himself. With a hearty "Ho, ho, ho!" and a twinkle in his eye, Santa delighted children and adults alike. Each child had the opportunity to sit on Santa's lap, share their Christmas wishes, and receive a small gift to cherish. The joy and excitement radiating from the youngsters were infectious! As families captured these precious moments with photographs, the spirit of community and togetherness flourished, making Lunch with Santa an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Whitevale's Lunch with Santa was more than just a festive gathering; it was a heartwarming celebration that brought the club together in the true spirit of the season. The delectable food, festive decorations, and, most importantly, the joy shared among families and friends made this event a memorable occasion.

We hope the magical atmosphere that resonated with the spirit of the season that we enjoyed on Saturday is present for all of you during this festive season!

The End of the Season is Nigh

It has to happen every year, but it still carries a bit of sadness to announce that Sunday, November 12 will be the last day of golf at Whitevale.

Management did look at the weather in hopes of continuing to play for a few more days, however, we have scheduled a third party using an air compressor to blow out the irrigation lines on Monday and Tuesday and for safety reasons, we will not have any golfers on the course. During this time, the staff will be busy putting away all the course furniture and preparing the course for the winter.

The last day of play will feature fun and challenging pins for those who come out to play.

We thank everyone for a great season, wish you all a safe and happy off season, and look forward to seeing you in 2024!

Thank You!

What could be better wrap up to a golf season than a bunch of members getting together to celebrate their weekday morning competitions with a tribute to their“Commissioners”? Not much!

Jeff Mepham sent in these photos of Brian Murdock who runs Monday and Friday games, and Norm Woods who runs the Wednesday game, receiving their appreciation envelopes from Jeff himself!

In Jeff's words: "The Whitevale members who played were generous in their gratitude of the laborious efforts required to "herd the cats" every week and set up the games."

They gathered in the rotunda after Friday’s game to thank Brian and Norm, enjoy a few beverages and generally "mis-represent" how well they all did this season.

2023 Women’s Closing Field Day Winners!

Glorious Weather and Outstanding Play

We recently celebrated the end of a fantastic golf season with a Women's Closing Field Day that was nothing short of remarkable. Mother Nature graced us with the perfect weather, providing an ideal backdrop for a day of camaraderie, competition, and excellent play on the greens.

The sun was shining brightly, and a gentle breeze whispered through the trees as the participants, both new and seasoned players, gathered for a day of golfing festivities. Laughter and excitement filled the air, setting the tone for a memorable event.

A Winning Team: Sandra Milner-Docking, Vanda Vicars, and Marianne Goss

Amidst the jovial atmosphere, one team emerged victorious and left an indelible mark on the event. Congratulations to the winning team, consisting of the talented and skillful golfers: Sandra Milner-Docking, Vanda Vicars, and Marianne Goss. Their combined efforts, precision shots, and strategic gameplay truly showcased the essence of women's golf at its finest.

The Women's Closing Field Day not only served as a wonderful competition but also as a platform to honor the incredible women who grace our golfing community. Golf is a sport that transcends age and background, and it's heartening to see women come together to celebrate their passion for the game.

As we conclude this year's golfing season, we extend our appreciation to all the participants, organizers, and supporters who made this day possible.

Seeking Board Nominations!

Dear Whitevale Members,

Our Nominating Committee is diligently interviewing a roster of candidates for the Whitevale Board of Directors . This year, four Directors are finishing their terms. We are therefore seeking to fill four vacancies. Our nominating committee will recommend a slate to be approved by the current Board before being presented to the membership.

  • Directors, attend and participate in Board Meetings, regular Committee Meetings as well as other task specific related activities.
  • Directors also work specifically with other Directors reviewing directions, policies and procedures that govern the organization.
  • Directors listen to members concerns and suggestions.
  • Directors review reports from operational staff in conjunction with the Director of Finance ensuring that the Club's finances are on budget and propose remedial action when required.
  • Directors monitor the overall health of the golf club and discuss and advise on issues or situations when necessary.
  • Directors remain knowledgeable about the golf industry by familiarizing themselves with articles and reports related to the golf industry.
  • Board work begins immediately after the Annual General Meeting.

One of the most positive things that emerged during last year's discussions with candidates was discovering the wealth of skills and talents our members possess - and, their eagerness to share these skills with the Board for the benefit of the club. Corporate leadership, volunteerism, achievement in business, education, sport, family and community involvement were just some of the skills last year's candidates brought to the table. And of course, a genuine love of Whitevale. Some cited a desire to give back, many having been members for a long time and been unable to commit in the past. The upside is, Whitevale will benefit from the fresh energy, skills and perspectives the four incoming Directors will bring.

As previously communicated the Nominating Committee is comprised of the following members : Michelle Miles , Jacquie Dunne , Wade Brackenbury & Padraig Darby. If you have interest in learning more about what is involved, please contact myself or Bob Tennyson, or any one of the individuals on our nominating committee.

FAQ - Bunker Renovation Project

A note was sent to all Equity Members earlier this week to answer a few questions that are being asked often and we thought we would add the information here in case you missed it!

Documents for the bunker project are on the Member website under The Bunker Project, but if you have not yet familiarized yourself with the entire presentation please note:

  • There is No Assessment - there will be a modest increase in the annual debt serving charge of approximately $85-$100 dollars per member / per year in 2025.
  • We have not embarked on a mission to redesign the bunkers - the moment you consider to redesign the golf course you will easily double the cost of the project which will also include a charge from a golf course architect .
  • A Golf Course Master Plan was commissioned in 2020 - and there was nothing contained in that plan that suggest we drastically change the bunkers.
  • Capital Improvements such as New Bunkers will only increase the share price of our memberships .
  • During the renovation DolTurf has committed to having a minimum of 15 holes open at all times , with the likelihood that only one or two holes will be closed for most of the time.
  • The course will be playable for the duration of the project including many of the competitions and apres-golf activities that members enjoy so much .

Every successful capital improvement at WGC has counted on third-party industry experts to eliminate the impossible challenges that would come from trying to use specific members feedback to drive a project like this.

The Members’ Meeting for the Bunker Renovation Vote is scheduled this coming Monday September 25th at 6PM . If you are unable to attend you may appoint a proxy holder or submit an advance ballot . These forms are available in the Office or on the Member website and must be submitted no later than 6PM on Thursday September 21.

We look forward to seeing those who are able to attend in person this Monday September 25th at 6PM and we thank those who have submitted proxies and / or advanced ballots.

Thanks for your participation,
The Board of Directors

In Memory - Kitty Braid

Kitty Braid
1945-2023

It is with great sadness we announce the sudden death of Kitty (Ann Catherine) Braid. Kitty passed away at home in Bob’s arms, on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at the age of 78.

Kitty is survived and deeply missed by her husband Bob, sons Ian (Karen) and Rob (Jenn), and grandchildren John, Connor, Katie and Cameron. She is also survived by her dear sister, Betsy, and brother-in-law, Ian, from Montreal, along with several nieces and nephews.

Kitty was born in Shanghai, where her parents had sought refuge during the late 1930's. Her journey then led her to Montreal, where in 1964 she met her soulmate. Together, they embarked on a journey of boundless love and laughter. A testament to their remarkable bond, their marriage endured just short of 57 years, marking them as an extraordinary partnership in every essence.

Kitty’s infectious laughter was one of her unique gifts, and her greatest joy was when she was in the company of her family. A proud Nanan to her grandkids, she was an unwavering pillar of love and support. She embraced every moment with them, encouraged them not to take things for granted and left a legacy of valuing the importance of love and family.

Kitty’s large circle of friends knew her as an exceptional confidante, fueled by an insatiable curiosity that enabled her to engage with others, sharing in their triumphs and offering solace in times of need. Beyond her close connections, Kitty’s imprint graced the golfing community of Whitevale, where her friendships and passion for the sport thrived. Among her accolades were a treasured hole-in-one, a distinction held exclusively within the Braid family lineage, and more recently consecutive member/guest championships (a fitting conclusion to her last round of golf!).

St. Augustine, Florida held a special place in Kitty’s heart, serving as a cherished home away from home. It was here she fostered enduring friendships and crafted countless memories. Her commitment extended to over three decades of volunteer service, exemplified through her involvement with Meals on Wheels and the Florida Council on Aging in St. Augustine. Though she’s no longer with us, her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched.

We invite you to join the family at the McEachnie Family Centre ( 20 Church St. N., Ajax -located beside McEachnie Funeral Home) for a Time to Remember on Tuesday, September 5th, between 4-7pm. A short eulogy service will be held at 5:30pm to honour and celebrate Kitty’s life.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Daily Bread Foodbank or to a charity of your choice. Your contributions will help make a meaningful impact in Kitty’s memory.

Turf Talk - Proof of Concept

In the spring of 2021, we renovated the two greenside bunkers on #18. During this work we installed a new type of liner in the base of the bunkers that is designed to allow water to infiltrate quickly and prevent washouts. It also creates a barrier that separates the clean bunker sand from the soil, silt and rocks used to shape the base of the bunker.

This liner, called Capillary Concrete, (or CapCon) has been installed extensively in Florida where hurricanes bring rainfall amounts that may have never been recorded in our area. It has performed very well on many golf courses with consistent proven results over the last decade.

Here at Whitevale, over the last two and a half seasons we closely watched how the liner performed, specifically at how well it prevented sand contamination during storm events. Over that time, we had some significant 1-inch-plus, (25+mm),storm events that washed out other bunkers, without causing contamination in the two bunkers at 18 green. We were seeing the functionality of the liner keeping the sand and subsoil separate.

After the recent storms on July 23rd and 24th the course received over 5 inches of rain - a ten-year storm event!

The story here is how the bunkers, with the CapCon liners stood up. Yes, sand had washed down the faces, but at a much smaller amount than all other bunkers with similar faces, and virtually no contamination. There was no standing water, the sand that did move was easily and quickly shoveled back up. The work to get these two bunkers back in play was a fraction of the work in all other bunkers.

Pictures speak volumes! Below are the two bunkers on the Tuesday morning before any work was done to them.

The bunkers (other than the two on 18) here are now 20 years old, and have significant contamination mixed within the sand. The proposed bunker renovation plan would bring all bunkers up to conditioning levels equal to the rest of the property. There's no way to sugar coat this, current bunker conditioning is unacceptable. The way the two bunkers at 18 green came through the storm proved to me that the investment in our planned bunker renovation is the right plan, at the right time.

Later this month, we will be holding a Town Hall meeting to present our plan to renovate the bunkers, and shortly after that a vote to approve the plan. For the record, I strongly support the initiative. This potential project is one of the most important we have ever addressed. The bunkers on 18 prove that short-term construction pain will give us long-term playability gain. Let's get this done.

Great Club + Great Volunteers & Members = Great Event!

Whitevale Golf Club showed off last week as we hosted the Ontario Senior Men's Provincial Championship. Not only did the course play well, despite significant rain, but all five Whitevale members playing in the event made the cut and played in the final round - congratulations gentlemen!
