Men's Haig

The 2021 Men's Haig had an incredible 108 men register to play!  Unfortunately not all of our competitors were able to finish their rounds as a lightning storm rolled through Whitevale at 5:00pm leaving 6 groups unable to finish their rounds.

Again this year we had a tightly contested event with the team of Kevin Ashe & Tom Bermingham squeaking out the victory with a stellar score of 61.6.  John Pullam and Tim Waddell were right on their heels with a score of 62.9.

Cam Hreljac and Pat Scanga took the gross competition with an amazing 6 under score of 66.  While the teams of Mark Brewer/Barry Catterall & Wade Brackenbury/Dave Walker finished tied for second with 2 under par 70's.

Thank you to all of our players and for the patience of the afternoon players as we tried to wait out the weather.

For a full list of results please log on to the calendar of the club website and click on the Men's Haig event page and the "Open Golf Genius" tab.

Women's Haig

The 2021 Women's Haig event saw 13 teams compete for the title in what has become one of our most popular formats.  The morning players were treated to slightly cooler temperatures and a little break from the sun, while the afternoon groups got the full weight of the sun and heat.

The competition was impressive with the vast majority of our teams finishing under par.  Our winners, Yvette Fulton & Margaret Chew fired an amazing 63.7 giving them a slight edge over second place finishers, Cathy Dorman & Margaret Hart, who shot 64.2.

Thank you to all who participated.  For a full list of winners and payouts, please visit the club website calendar, click on the Women's Haig and the "Open Golf Genius" tab.

The Whitevale Classic

It felt like things were getting a little bit back to normal as the competitors gathered for the first Whitevale Classic in two years.  Despite being limited to field of 60 players, the sense of camaraderie and friendly competition filled the patio as teams prepared to tee off.  Temperatures reaching the high 30's set the stage for some hot scores.  There was a tie at -9 for third between the teams of Chris Couch, Brett McConnachie, Brent Wiens, Sean Gibson & Donnie O'Connell, Fred Calvert, Darryl Brown & Tim Packer.  Second place was captured by Dan McConnachie, Anthony Sgovio, Gabor Karl & Jerry Kimber, who fired a terrific -12.  But the day was won by Pat Scanga (who shot 71 on his own ball) Jeff McConkey, Tom Bermingham & Kevin Neild.

Congratulations to all who participated to make this event so much fun!

The Husband & Wife/Common Law

We had 16 Couples take part in this year's Husband & Wife/Common Law event.  With the humidity finally taking a day off, our players were treated to a perfect day for golf.  This event is a true Alternate Shot format, which can be tough on a relationship!  But the patio was full of smiles and stories at the conclusion of play.

There were several good scores including a tie for second between Chris & Debbie Couch and Michael Woolgar & Darlene Hart who both fired a net 1 under par 71!  But it was Mark and Lisa Brewer who set themselves apart from the field (including a 1 under par gross back 9) with a net 7 under 65.

Thank you to all who participated and helped make this event so much fun!

2021 Steak & Corn Mixed Haig

On Thursday, August 12, we hosted the 2021 Steak & Corn event.  The event is a chance for members to meet new members they may not otherwise play with and to compete in a fun Haig format.  We once again missed the forecasted inclement weather and a bit of cloud cover offered some protection against another scorching day.  18 teams counted themselves as champions, taking home steaks for their efforts, but it was the team of Tom O'Connor & Sue Dickinson that will have their names engraved on the trophy with a score of 66.2.

Congratulations to Temie Fry & Michael Woolgar who won their respective closest to the hole competitions.

A big thank you to Brian & Susanne Sambleson for their continued support of this event.

Passing of David Clark

"It is with great sadness we announce that DAVID CLARK passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, at home with his family by his side.  He was 78 years old.

David was diagnosed with cancer in January. He battled courageously throughout his treatment, but his body decided it had had enough.

David leaves behind his wife, Linda, of 52 years, children Hilary and Stewart (Nancy), and five grandchildren, Maggie, Ian, Eric, Cameron, and Gordon.  David was predeceased by his brother Ronnie (Rhona) with whom he maintained a special bond despite spending most of their lives separated by an ocean. He is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and extended family in Canada and Northern Ireland.

David arrived from Northern Ireland in 1965 and after some shenanigans, settled down into marriage and a career with Honeywell.  David was an avid golfer and a member of Whitevale Golf Club for over 25 years.  He enjoyed the finer things in life, always taking great pleasure in good food and any kind of drink. David was a lifelong sports fan with a special interest in Premier League Soccer.  He enjoyed home repairs, and gardening, and he took great pride in the flower boxes he created every summer.

A private family service will be held.  Donations to the Terry Fox Foundation or the Scott Mission would be greatly appreciated. Messages of condolences may be made at https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/west-hill-on/david-clark-10153748"

Passing of Darryl Leach

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of past Whitevale member, Darryl Leach. please see the details of his obituary below.

Following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer, on Monday, April 12, 2021 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa, 24 days after his 74th birthday. The number 74 is: the 21st distinct semiprime and the 11th of the form 2 x q (2 x 37); represented as 202, a palindrome, in the base-6 numeral system; and is the third hungry number.

Anyone who knew Darryl will appreciate this information, and his family was able to share this with him when his last birthday was celebrated at home. He also enjoyed the number 73, as a perfect prime, and his lifelong favourite – his jersey number from his days with the Oshawa Generals, 17, a prime number that is the sum of the first four prime numbers. After retiring from the Actuarial field, where he was a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, or as he liked to say the CIA, Darryl spent most of his time at The Cabin, his sanctuary, driving his tractor, grooming his trails, moving dirt, and caring for his trout pond. As a lifelong fan of the Detroit Red Wings, and the Toronto Raptors since day-one, he spent his down time watching them play while enjoying a bowl, (or two), of ice cream and a coke zero. He reluctantly retired his membership from Whitevale Golf Club last season, after several decades on the course.

Darryl is survived by his wife, Irene (nee: Ochej), his loving children, daughter, Kimberley, sons, Derrik (Maryam Moazami), and Damian (Stephanie), his brother Barry, and sisters, Tana and Cori. Proud grandfather of Benjamin, Jillian, Samuel and little Annabella. They always brought a smile to his face and he printed more pictures than you can imagine and carried them with him to show to all. He will be missed by sisters-in-law Helen Curtis and Sandi Simard (Marc Essertaize), and his four-legged grand-dog, Hank. Darryl is predeceased by his parents, Donald and Evelyn Leach.

As per his wishes, Darryl will be cremated. A Celebration of Darryl’s Life will be held, at a later date, when we are able to gather. A Memorial Research Bursary is being established to support pancreatic cancer research in Canada, if you are interested in making a donation, please contact the family.

Passing of Jim Sarvinis

SARVINIS, JIM March 15, 1938 - February 14, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of past Whitevale Member, Jim Sarvinis. Survived by his loving wife of 57 years Sophie, children Donna, Philip (Wendy), Jim (Dee), and his adoring grandchildren Stephanie, Alex (Katie), CJ and Correna. He will be missed immensely by his immediate family, his brother John (Mary), sister Pauline (Sam), sisters-in-law Olga (Peter, predeceased) and Jody, nieces, nephews, many cousins and friends. Dedo was always proud of his Macedonian heritage.

Despite some difficult childhood and teenage years during and after the civil war, he had good memories of the "old country" which he loved to share in his stories. He arrived in Canada in 1957 and never looked back, knowing he was truly living the Canadian dream. He started working as a dishwasher, eventually saved enough to buy his first restaurant and later partnered with his brother and brother-in-law to build a successful business which they operated in the Pickering Town Centre for more than 35 years. His entrepreneurial spirit, work ethic and dedication to customer service were a model for all of us. Following retirement, he continued to golf (right up until the 2020 season) but especially enjoyed his time with Sophie and his family. Soccer in the backyard won't be the same without him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so.
